Kids Jiu-Jitsu in Austin
AMP BJJ runs the largest family-first kids Jiu-Jitsu program in Austin — three academies, one mat philosophy, and a coaching staff of parents who actually know how to handle a room full of kids.
Parents across Austin come to us with the same wishlist: a kids martial arts program that builds real confidence, teaches real self-defense without striking, and runs in a room where the coaches actually like kids. That's what our Youth BJJ program (ages 6–13) is built around. Classes are split by age and experience so a 6-year-old isn't training with a 12-year-old, every promotion is earned, and our older kids and upper belts mentor the newer ones on the mat.
Because Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling art with no punching or kicking, it's one of the safest options for kids and one of the most effective for real-world self-defense. Kids learn how to handle being grabbed, pushed, or pinned without panicking — and they learn to lose a round, shake hands, and come back stronger. That shows up at school, at tryouts, and in every hard conversation they'll ever have.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the martial art most parents pick in Austin.
When parents look for martial arts classes for kids in Austin, they're usually choosing between karate, taekwondo, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). BJJ is the modern grappling-based martial art that's grown the fastest with families — and for good reason.
Unlike striking-based martial arts, BJJ teaches kids how to defend themselves without throwing or taking punches. It's a thinking martial art — closer to a live chess match than a sparring drill — and it scales from a 3-year-old in our Preschool class all the way up to parents in our Adult class.
- No striking, no head trauma — kids learn to solve problems on the ground, not throw punches.
- Real self-defense that actually works against a bigger person — based on leverage, not size.
- Builds focus, confidence, and respect in every class through our Winning Ways character curriculum.
- Parents can train the exact same martial art alongside their kids in our Family Class.
- Recommended by pediatricians and parents for kids with ADHD, autism, or extra energy to burn.

What's the best age to start kids Jiu-Jitsu in Austin?
Most kids start at AMP BJJ between ages 4 and 8, but we have students starting as young as 3 in our Preschool program and as old as 12 in their first ever class. The right age is whenever your kid is ready to follow a coach in a group setting. The earlier they start, the more naturally the listening, focus, and physical confidence develop.
Is BJJ better than karate or taekwondo for my Austin kid?
It depends on what you want, but most Austin parents we meet end up choosing BJJ because there's no striking, the skills hold up under real resistance, and kids learn to solve problems instead of throw punches. Karate and taekwondo are great for forms and discipline; BJJ is great for confidence, problem-solving, and real-world safety.
