Preschool Jiu-Jitsu in Austin, TX
AMP BJJ runs dedicated Preschool Jiu-Jitsu (ages 3–5) at all three Austin academies — Northwest Hills, Westlake Hills, and Cedar Park. Built around how preschoolers actually learn: short, high-energy 30-minute classes with games, repetition, and lots of high-fives.
Most Austin gyms that say they teach preschoolers actually just let 3-year-olds tag along to a kids class. We don't. AMP's Preschool BJJ is a separate program with its own coaches, its own 30-minute format, and its own age-appropriate belt and stripe progression. Three-year-olds aren't trying to learn armbars yet — they're learning how to listen to a coach, how to take turns, how to fall safely, and how to be physical with another kid without anyone getting hurt. The Jiu-Jitsu comes later, and it comes faster because of everything they built here.
One of our co-founders started his own boys at 2.5 and 4. The older one wouldn't step on the mat for weeks. His outgoing little brother charged out first and pulled him along. Years later, both kids are unrecognizable — the shy one found his voice, the wild one found his focus. We've coached hundreds of preschoolers like that. We know what to do with the shy ones, the wild ones, and the ones who melt down five minutes in.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the martial art most parents pick in Austin.
When parents look for martial arts classes for kids in Austin, they're usually choosing between karate, taekwondo, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). BJJ is the modern grappling-based martial art that's grown the fastest with families — and for good reason.
Unlike striking-based martial arts, BJJ teaches kids how to defend themselves without throwing or taking punches. It's a thinking martial art — closer to a live chess match than a sparring drill — and it scales from a 3-year-old in our Preschool class all the way up to parents in our Adult class.
- No striking, no head trauma — kids learn to solve problems on the ground, not throw punches.
- Real self-defense that actually works against a bigger person — based on leverage, not size.
- Builds focus, confidence, and respect in every class through our Winning Ways character curriculum.
- Parents can train the exact same martial art alongside their kids in our Family Class.
- Recommended by pediatricians and parents for kids with ADHD, autism, or extra energy to burn.

Is my 3-year-old really ready for Jiu-Jitsu?
Yes — three is the most common starting age for AMP's preschool program. Classes are built for short attention spans, with games, repetition, and lots of high-fives. We've coached hundreds of 3-year-olds, including the shy ones, the wild ones, and the meltdown-prone ones. We know what to do.
What's the difference between preschool BJJ and a regular kids class?
Preschool BJJ (ages 3–5) is shorter (30 minutes), more game-based, and taught by coaches trained specifically for this age. There's no rough drilling, no live rolling, and no contact pressure. Kids learn body awareness, listening, and the first real BJJ building blocks through play.
Where in Austin can my 4-year-old try Jiu-Jitsu?
All three AMP Austin locations run Preschool BJJ: Northwest Hills (Spicewood Springs), Westlake Hills (Bee Caves Rd), and Cedar Park (Whitestone Blvd). Pick the closest and book a free trial.
What if my preschooler is too shy or too wild for class?
We've coached both. Shy kids: parents are welcome to sit on the mat with them the first class or two. Wild kids: this is the best room for them — the class format burns the energy that's fueling the meltdowns at home.
