Teens & Adults

Most people who walk in for their first class are nervous about the same things: I'm too old. I'm out of shape. I'll be the worst one in the room. I'll get hurt. Everyone's going to be 22 and trying to kill me. None of that is true here — and within a couple of weeks, you'll forget you ever worried about it.

People come to Jiu-Jitsu for very different reasons, and we've coached every version. Teens who are quiet, anxious, glued to a screen, or getting pushed around at school — and need somewhere they can be strong, respected, and physically confident without it being violent. Twenty-somethings who are sick of the gym, sick of running on a treadmill, and want something with actual purpose. Parents in their thirties and forties who want to be the version of themselves their kids deserve — strong, capable, present, and able to protect them if it ever came to that. Women who want real self-defense in a room where they're treated with respect, not as a novelty. People in their fifties and sixties who want to keep their bodies and minds sharp for the next 30 years, not just survive them. Every one of them was nervous on day one. Every one of them is still training. What Jiu-Jitsu actually solves is bigger than fitness. It's the stress that builds up from a job you can't punch back at. It's the anxiety that has nowhere to go. It's the slow drift of becoming someone you don't quite recognize in the mirror. It's the quiet worry that if something bad happened to you or your family, you'd have no idea what to do. Jiu-Jitsu hands you a craft you can practice for the rest of your life — one that gets you in the best shape you've ever been in almost as a side effect, builds real composure under pressure, and connects you to a room of people who become some of the closest friends you'll ever have. The mat is the great equalizer. Status, job, age, ego — none of it survives a round. What's left is who you actually are, and who you're willing to become. We also take beginners seriously. Our fundamentals classes are built for people who have never grappled before. There's no striking, no hazing, no 'sink-or-swim' rolling on day one. The room is full of grown-ups who remember exactly how scary their first class was, and they'll be the ones helping you through yours.

FAQ

Teens & Adults — common questions.

I've never trained any martial art. Will I fit in?

Yes — most of our adults started as complete beginners. You'll drill technique with a partner at your pace and pick up live training only when you're ready. No striking, no ego.

What's the difference between BJJ and other martial arts for adults?

BJJ is grappling — no punches or kicks. It rewards leverage and technique over strength, which is why it works for every age and size, and why it's the foundation of modern MMA.

How fit do I need to be to start?

Not fit at all. People come in straight off the couch all the time. BJJ itself builds the conditioning. Train at your own pace, drink water, and you'll be surprised how fast your body catches up.

I'm a woman — will I be the only one?

No. Every AMP location has women training across every class. We pair partners by size and experience, not gender.
