How to Choose a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gym for Your Family

Published May 31, 2026

The right Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym for a family is the one where every person in the house can train under one roof, on a schedule that actually works, with coaches who are as good with a 5-year-old as they are with a 45-year-old. Most adult-focused gyms can teach kids, but very few are built for families. The difference shows up in the first week.

Here is the checklist most parents end up using:

  • Watch a class before you sign anything. A good gym welcomes parents to sit and observe. Look at how the coach talks to the kids, whether the room is engaged, and whether parents look like they want to be there.
  • Ask about age splits. Preschoolers should not be in a class with 12-year-olds. Quality programs split by age and stage.
  • Check the schedule against your real life. Pulled-from-work classes do not get attended. Look for evenings and weekends that match your family's rhythm — and ideally classes where parents and kids can train at the same time.
  • Ask about a real free trial. Not a paid intro week — an actual free class. Any gym confident in what they do will let your family try one.
  • Meet the head coach. Belt color matters less than how the head coach talks to your kid and whether they remember your kid's name on visit two.
  • Look for a no-striking program for young kids. Grappling-based BJJ is the safest entry point. No punches, no kicks, all leverage and technique.

AMP BJJ is built around exactly this checklist — family classes where parents and kids train together, dedicated preschool and youth programs, and a free trial for every member of the family. We have locations in Westlake Hills, Northwest Hills, Cedar Park, and Baton Rouge. Find the one near you and come watch a class.
