What to Wear (and Bring) to Your First Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class

Published May 31, 2026

For your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class, wear comfortable athletic clothes — a t-shirt and shorts or sweatpants work great. No shoes on the mat. You do not need a gi (the traditional uniform) yet. Most gyms, including AMP, will loan you one for a free trial if you want the full experience.

Here is the simple first-day list:

  • Clothes. T-shirt, shorts or sweats with no zippers, buttons, or pockets that could catch on a partner.
  • Feet. Shoes or sandals to walk to the mat — bare feet on the mat itself.
  • Hair. Tie long hair back. Hair ties without metal are best.
  • Hygiene. Clean clothes, clean feet, clipped nails (fingers and toes). Shower before class if you can.
  • Water. Bring a refillable bottle. You will need it.
  • Mouthguard. Optional for your first class. Useful once you start training regularly.
  • Jewelry. Take it off. Earrings, rings, necklaces, watches — all stay in the car.
  • Show up early. Get there 10 to 15 minutes before class so you can sign a waiver, meet a coach, and see the space.

What to leave at the gym door: ego, expectations of being good at it on day one, and worry about looking awkward. Everyone on the mat started exactly where you are.

If you are taking your first class at AMP BJJ, we will hand you a loaner gi, walk you through warm-ups, and partner you with someone friendly. Book a free trial and we will see you 15 minutes early.
